Artists View of Technology and AI | by Saman Rahbar | Feb, 2024

Source: Is AI Art Really Art? — Nautilus

A view on some recent threads I read these days around AI/technology and the hype around its power …

In a world dominated by the relentless march of technology, as an artist with a soul immersed in the melodies of the piano and the strokes of a paintbrush (recently), find solace in the midst of the digital revolution. My perspective on technology and artificial intelligence is colored by the values of collaboration, passion, and the beauty found in imperfections.

In my small studio, where the scent of oil paints mingles with the resonance of piano keys, I contemplate the role of AI (as an AI practitioner and scientist) in the artistic realm. Many view technology as a threat, an encroachment on the sanctity of human creativity. However, I see it differently — as a tool, a mere extension of the artist’s hand, lacking the nuances and depth that come from a soul inspired by the imperfections of life.

Life, in my eyes, should be a symphony of shared experiences and shared growth. The notion of competition and power, often touted as the driving force of progress, dissolves into a mere illusion. For me, the beauty lies in helping one another, cultivating a community where each artist contributes to the collective masterpiece of existence.

As I sit at my piano, fingers dancing across the keys, I ponder the limitations of artificial intelligence. While it can replicate patterns and imitate styles, it lacks the essence of the human touch. It cannot comprehend the depth of emotions that infuse a melody, nor can it appreciate the beauty found in the flaws of a piece.

Similarly, in the realm of visual art, AI can generate images based on learned patterns, but it fails to capture the profound connection between the artist and the canvas. The imperfections that make each stroke unique, the emotional journey expressed through color and form — these are the elements that elevate art beyond the reach of artificial intelligence.

In a world obsessed with perfection and the pursuit of an unattainable ideal, I revel in the belief that imperfections are the very essence of beauty. Each stroke, each note, carries a story of its own — a story of growth, learning, and the inherent beauty found in embracing the imperfect.

In the grand tapestry of life, where technology and AI play their roles, I, as an artist, stand firm in my conviction that the true magic lies in the human experience. The collaborative spirit, the passion for creation, and the celebration of imperfections — these are the elements that transcend the limitations of artificial intelligence, ensuring that the soul of art remains a uniquely human endeavor. Life is too short to be overshadowed by illusions of competition and power; instead, let us create a harmonious symphony, a canvas adorned with the vibrant hues of shared experiences, and a testament to the beauty found in the imperfections of our existence.
