KIMT News 3’s Emma Esteb has information on what Rochester Parks and Recreation and the Rochester Arts Center is looking for in their submissions
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Rochester Parks and Recreation is working with the Rochester Art Center to find local artists to design two pieces for Cascade Lake park. Artists are able to submit their designs from Jan. 10 through Feb. 10.
Cascade Lake Park is looking to find one piece of art to be displayed by the roundabout and another piece near the entrance. Parks and Recreation and the Art Center hope that the submissions for these two projects include aspects and history of the park and emphasize the importance of Cascade Creek.
Rochester Park Planner Jeff Feece says, “one of the things that we are looking for from the artists is kind of the, incorporating the context of the park, you know its a former gravel mine, so maybe there is materials that can be incorporated or things that can be, forms that can be used that would echo the former use.”
The artist chosen for the roundabout project will receive a $50 thousand budget and the entrance sign artist will have $20 thousand to complete their work. Feece tells us why the community’s involvement in this project is crucial.
Feece says, “I think the arts community in Rochester has really grown in the last probably 5 to 10 years and so yes we think its important just like we try and use local contractors on other projects its important, if we can, work with local artists.”
The final design will be chosen on Feb. 28 and the artwork will be installed by Oct. 31 of this year.
