ArtCrawl Harlem Unveils “Games People Play” as the 2024 Boundaries & Connections Artist Residency Theme on Governors Island

ArtCrawl Harlem, a New York State nonprofit, proudly announces the launch of the 2024 Boundaries & Connections Artist Residency House on Governors Island, slated to run from May 18th through November 3, 2024. Situated at 403 Colonels Row on Governors Island, the ArtCrawl Harlem House provides an invigorating space for artists to explore and innovate under the theme “Games People Play.”

This year’s residency will feature six visual artists in residence ( Camille Clavery, Nadia Porras, Ruben Natal-San Miguel, Robert Lee Sims II, Darian Stewart and Shenna Vaughn ), seven installation artists ( Michelle Brody, Graciella Cassell, Aaron Cobbet, Alexis Mendoza, Lydia Nobles and Sally Twin) three poets in residence (Carol Chapman, David Navaro and Masad Qawishabazz, each selected for their innovative approach to exploring the theme through their work.  Special photography exhibit will be presented by Ernie Paniccioli, Lisa Wade and Louel Valentine. 

Participants/Guests are encouraged to collaborate, engage with the public, and participate in special programs and public engagements every weekend, Friday through Sunday. The importance of playing games extends far beyond mere entertainment. From fostering social connections to promoting cognitive development and emotional well-being, games play a crucial role in shaping individuals and societies. Embracing playfulness and incorporating games into our lives can enrich our experiences, strengthen relationships, and contribute to our overall happiness and fulfillment.

“We are thrilled to uphold our tradition of hosting the artist residency on Governors Island for the fifth consecutive year,” stated ArtCrawl Harlem Executive Director, Ulysses S. Williams“The Boundaries & Connections residency offers a distinctive platform for artists to expand the horizons of their practice and connect with audiences in a vibrant and inclusive setting.”

Throughout the residency, participating artists will explore the theme “Games People Play,” delving into the myriad ways in which games, whether literal or metaphorical, shape our lives, relationships, and communities. From traditional board games to social dynamics and power structures, artists will dissect the complexities of human interaction and competition through their creative endeavors.

The ArtCrawl Harlem House on Governors Island will serve as a nucleus for creativity and collaboration, boasting regular programming such as artist talks, workshops, and public installations. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the artists, explore the exhibitions, and engage in hands-on activities during the residency. 

Governors Island Opening Day is Saturday, May 17, 2024 11:00am – 5:00pm.  The houses and public venues will remain open to the public every Friday through Sunday.  for more information visit https://www.govisland.com/
