Gabriela Marvans, Ryan Rothweiler VIVA Gallery’s March guest artists

The wife and husband team, Gabriela Marvans, originally from Cuernavaca, Mexico, and Ryan Rothweiler from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are the March guest artists at VIVA Gallery in Viroqua.

Rothweiler, a muralist, has resided in Viroqua for over 10 years. Marvans, a cartonera, meaning a paper maché sculptor, moved to the United States in 2019. Since then they have been working collaboratively on murals and paper maché sculptures.

According to a press release from the VIVA Gallery Artists Cooperative, people may have seen their work in places such as Keewaydin Farms in Viola where together they organize the Día de Muertos event in October. That work that includes building small and big scale Catrinas and other paper maché sculptures, involving repurposing materials like paper grocery bags. Their work also incorporates wire, reed frame and/or clay molds followed by layers of paper. Check out more about this husband and wife team at folkartcollective.com.
