LEWISBURG — The Bucknell Department of Art and Art History’s Ekard Artist-in-Residence program will present renowned Chilean artist Voluspa Jarpa, who will be presenting an immersive video performance entitled EXTINCTION at 7:20 p.m. Monday, March 25, outside Bertrand Library. The 40-minute performance is free and open to the public.
During her Bucknell residency, Voluspa has conducted research around the Susquehanna River and the Susquehannocks peoples who inhabited the lands in its vicinity and who were extinct during the 17th century. Since 2018, Voluspa has been researching the global phenomenon of the exhibition of people during colonial and universal fairs, where they constituted veritable human zoos associated with the idea of extinction, modernity and progress.
Through the performance, which will feature documents, photographs and animations projected by video mapping, viewers will have an immersive experience of these stories. Jarpa will present a second performance of EXTINCTION at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, which can be viewed from the Lewisburg bridge over the river.
“I am really grateful for this time at the Ekard Artist-in-Residence and very grateful to all the people who have collaborated and worked to make EXTINCTION possible,” said Jarpa. “It will be an activity open to the Bucknell University community and also open to the people of Lewisburg, so we can reminisce together.”
The Ekard Artist-in-Residence provides students at Bucknell with opportunities to engage with and learn from accomplished artists through master classes, workshops, demonstrations and/or studio critiques in conjunction with the Department of Art and Art History.
Selected artists actively share their own studio methods and processes through master classes, presentations, workshops, studio visits, pop-up exhibitions, installations or other experiences with students on our residential campus in Lewisburg, Pa. Artists reside in Lewisburg, with prior stays ranging from a few days to a full year.
