It’s A Homecoming For Singapore Artists

Lucknow/Ayodhya: It was a homecoming for six Indian-origin artists from Singapore who returned to their roots to perform in the Deepotsav at Ayodhya on Friday. These artists in the age group of 16-40 had been preparing a kathak dance ballet based on Ramayana for about a month. The group is led by Deepmala Sachan (33), a disciple of kathak exponent Kumkum Dhar, who choreographed the performance. While Sachan is head of the kathak department in Singapore based Sarva Fine Arts Institute, others are all students.“There was a language barrier because most of my students were able to understand only English and explaining the terms in Hindi was a task,” said Sachan.Their 35-minute performance will begin with Ram Stuti on the bhajan ‘Shri Ram Chandra Kripalu Bhajman’, followed by Shuddh Nritya (pure dance) including todas, paran, tukada, tihai and jugalbandi. In the end, the Ramashtakam performance will depict the stories from Ramayana — Dhanush Bhang, Sita Swayamvar, Kaikei asking Dashrath to send Ram to exile and crown Bharat as king, kidnapping of Sita and Ravan dahan, said Sachan. She added that classical music was used instead of Bollywood songs for the dance performance so that people from across the globe could understand the story with the power of music and dance.Anvi Bansal (16), a Singapore native, and her mother Vidhi Garg (40), who was born in Jaipur, are also part of the group. They were nervous yet exhilarated to learn about the event.“I underwent self-doubt over whether I will be able to come at par with my mentor’s expectations but my husband Ankesh supported and encouraged us to participate in the event. After practising for 1-2 hours at the institute, my daughter and I used to practice at home,” said Garg. Anvi would get into the shoes of a teacher at home and help her mother correct the postures.
