Local artist shows off his Metal Masterpieces

Nature By Metal

Md. – The Main Street Gallery in Cambridge has a new summer show, “Nature by Metal”. The show will feature a variety of wild creatures all created by an artist from various kinds of metal.

Art is in the Eye of the Beholder, and at Main Street Art, artist Gary Schuler is taking metal and turning it into beautiful masterpieces. Gary Schuler is a Cambridge resident and has been working with metal for over 20 years. He creates flat and 3-dimensional pieces with everything from bending to welding. “That’s the way I am, I like challenging work, That’s one thing that really, I like to have my art look real, and I like my art to be challenging… Basically, I use steel, stainless steel, copper… Some of its for the inside of the house which you can hang on a wall, and some of it’s for outside.”

Gary loves all of his work and says it can take anywhere from 2 hours to months, and truly hopes the community appreciates the realistic quality of his work. He says that many people like to see his art in nature, and that’s why he has so many animals and the fox is his favorite. “Living on the Eastern Shore has really given me a great appreciation for nature. fishing, birds, a lot of different things… They really look good over the water, when you in your house and you’re looking out over the water, they actually look like real geese.”

Lisa Krentel is one of the Cooperative members who rents out the Art Gallery. She said they needed something new and exciting! “Every 2 months, we need a new guest artist. Every 2 months we hang a new show all of us produce new work… I heard early on about his shark and was shown pictures and i thought, here’s a possible guest artist, he’s been great. We never had a metal artist.” She said he’s been great to work with and they hoping this bring new attention to the gallery. “`This is metal work, it’s different. It’s got this craft element, people use it outside, it a good gift item, and it might attract men.”

Nature by Metal will open July 5 and run through September 1. There will be a special reception on Saturday, July 13 where Gary will give a brief artist talk, and both receptions are free and open to the public.
