Makers Market showcases local artists, creators – The Hawkeye

Women’s History Month ended with an empowering event at Bayou Pointe, showcasing unique creators across North Louisiana.

The Women’s Symposium, held on March 20, featured a variety of creators during the Maker’s Market. The market opened at the start of the Symposium and swarmed with attendees trying to peruse each shop before leaving. Some artists sold hand-made earrings and paintings, while a few makers sold self-care items such as soaps and facial scrubs.

These businesses thrived throughout the afternoon; a few even left the market early because they ran out of products. Creator Lexi Smith sold a variety of her hand-made earrings made from resin or various trinkets. Smith discussed her reasoning for opening her online store.

“I actually went to school here at ULM. I was an art major,” Smith said. “This is kind of an outlet to be creative outside of class.”

Many creators at the market shared stories about the beginnings of their businesses. Genavieve Louise spoke about her business startup and struggles as a new business owner.

“I actually started my business in the pandemic, while I was pregnant,” Louise said. “We had nothing but time.”

One of the makers, Amanda Myree, had a set full of business items, such as a laptop and a desk for a professional photoshoot. Most attendees were businesswomen, and she networked with professionals needing a new headshot. She even offered a discount for students who shot with her during the event.

The makers began packing up around 5:30 p.m., leaving empty bags and smiles as the businesses they worked so hard on blossomed at the event.

The booths full of women with successful businesses helped cement the empowering words spoken during the panels. Attendees applied the discussion to real-life scenarios while also getting to look at cute items. Adding the Maker’s Market to the Women’s Symposium gave attendees a sense of connection regarding the event’s topics and properly wrapped up Women’s History Month.
