Marginalized Artists are Front and Center at the 2024 Venice Biennale

The list of 332 participating artists has been announced for the main exhibition at this year’s 60th Venice Biennale, curated by Adriano Pedrosa. The show’s theme of “Foreigners Everywhere” explores the idea of living on the margins as an outsider or an émigré.

At a press conference this morning, Pedrosa, the biennale’s first Latin American curator, highlighted the considerable geographic spread of the artists he had selected with an emphasis on Indigenous artists and those from the Global South. The total number of artists included this year far surpasses the 213 included in the 2022 edition.

The Biennale’s outgoing president Roberto Cicutto also announced “today, I’m passing the presidency to Pietrangelo Buttafuoco.” The right-wing journalist was controversially nominated to take over by Italy’s culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, putting an end to Cicutto’s presidency after just one term out of a possible three.

“We are managing this passage,” he added, “fulling respecting the institution, so that everything that will take place will be in line with the quality that the Biennale deserves.”

Themes of migration and decolonization are at the core of this year’s main exhibition, which responds to “a world full of multiple crises concerning the movement and existence of people across countries, nations, territories, and borders, which reflect the perils and pitfalls of language, translation, ethnicity, expressing differences, and disparities conditioned by identity, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, wealth, and freedom,” per Pedrosa’s curatorial statement.

In his opening speech, Cicutto referred to various conflicts unfolding across the globe, including Russia’s war on Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war. “No curator in picking the theme of their exhibition seeks directly to engage in a hot topic of discussion,” he said, but added that he saw the Biennale as “a unique meeting ground” between countries. This year there will be 90 national pavilions in addition to the main exhibition.

The work on which the exhibition’s title is based, Claire Fontaine’s evolving neon sculpture series Foreigners Everywhere (2004-), will be installed in 53 different languages in the Gaggiandre in the Arsenale.

Pedrosa noted that Indigenous artists are often treated like foreigners in their own countries. The Indigenous Brazilian collective MAHKU – Movimento dos Artistas Huni Kuin will produce a monumental mural for the facade of the Central Pavilion, which houses the main exhibition. The first room will contain a large scale installation by the Mataaho Collective, a collaboration of four Māori women.

Artists who have been historically persecuted or marginalized are also a primary focus for Pedrosa, who noted that he is first Biennale curator who openly identifies as queer. One section of the exhibition will feature queer artists like Erica Rutherford, Isaac Chong Wai, Elyla, Violeta Quispe, Louis Frateno, and Dean Sameshima, among many others. Another room will present three important European female outsider artists: Madge Gill from the U.K., Anna Zemánková from the Czech Republic, and Aloïse Corbaz from Switzerland.

Another section, the so-called “Contemporary Nucleus,” is inspired by the curator Marco Scortini’s “Disobedience Archive,” which began in 2005. One part will focus on films and videos related to Diaspora activism and another related to gender disobedience. Works by the 39 participating artists were made between 1975 and 2023.

The exhibition’s main art historical emphasis, known as the “Historical Nucleus,” will give prominence to modernist movements that emerged in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East during the 20th century but remain still largely unknown.

“We urgently need to learn more about, and from, them,” said Pedrosa.

The first part of this section is dedicated to portraiture and will present works by 112 artists like Selwyn Wilson, Cicero Dias, Yêdamaria, Laura Rodig, Romulo Rozo, Inji Efflatoun, Grace Salome Kwami, Lee Qoede, and Gerard Sekoto. Another part will feature 37 abstract artists, including Sandy Adsett, Fanny Sanin, Eduardo Terrazas, Samia Halaby, and Etel Adnan.

Finally, the second part will explore the activities of 40 artists who are part of Italy’s first or second generation Diaspora. Works by artists like Lidy Prati, Bona de Mandiargues, Nenne Sanguineti Poggi, and Gianni Bertini will be presented in glass easel displays in a manner inspired by the Italian-born Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi.
