Massena Artists Association hosting ‘oversized show’ of artwork | Education

MASSENA — There’s going to be a really big show at the Massena Public Library.

The Massena Artists Association will host its first-ever “oversized show” for some of its members who have works that are larger than what they would normally submit for other shows.

The show will kick off with an opening reception that’s set for 4 to 4:45 p.m. Friday, and the artwork will remain on display through Sept. 20.

Association Treasurer and show organizer Patricia F. Murphy said the featured artists who will showcase their work are Steve Cobb, Aimee Douglass, Cheri Furnace, Trish Fogarty Murphy, Anne Ray, HARayme, Patty VanPatten, Mona Zillah and Kris Rozelle.

She said it’s an opportunity for the artists to create larger, more detailed versions of their works. She’s among them, using large Mesa panels to paint on when she wants to create a larger piece.

“Typically, because of space and the displays, we can only accommodate pieces that are 36 by 36 or less. So, this is for our members that work big. Sometimes we go outside those boundaries,” Murphy said. “It’s going to be very different. It will be a real different flavor. I think this one’s going to be a lot more expressive and a lot less traditional.”

Although the pieces will be larger, she said the artists will be using traditional mediums. There is no set theme, allowing the artists to express their creativity.

“There’s going to be some oil, some acrylics and mixed medium,” she said.

The show is for Massena Artists Association members only for the time being.

“We’re going to start with us and then we’ll see what kind of response we get and go from there. We’re just trying something different,” Murphy said.

The show comes at a time when she said they’re seeing increased membership.

“I think we’ve grown a lot this past two years. I think we started to pick up again post-COVID and get more new members,” she said.

The current officers are President Carolyn Cook, Vice President Kris Rozelle, Secretary Lisa Darrow, and Murphy as treasurer.
