Restoration Concert Features Trio of Classical Artists

The Restoration Concert on Sunday, Jan. 28, at 4 p.m. will feature a classical trio: flutist Susan Greenberg, clarinetist Michele Zukovsky and pianist Pierre Tang. The program will feature music by Bizet, Shostakovich, Ginastera, Debussy, Albert, Chihara, Brahms and Joplin.
The concert is presented by the Restoration Concerts Committee of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library and will be held in the historic Library Community Room at 1115 El Centro St. in South Pasadena. Tickets will be available at the door for $25.
Flutist Susan Greenberg enjoys a versatile career as soloist, chamber musician, symphony player, and recording artist. The Los Angeles Times has described her playing as “brilliant,” “elegant” and “supple,” and has lauded her “panache” and “musical projection.” During her 36 years with the L.A. Chamber Orchestra, Greenberg was a frequent soloist on both flute and piccolo.
In addition, Greenberg has recorded for more than 500 motion pictures and many television shows, including “The Simpsons,” for the last 25 years.
Greenberg is currently the flute professor at Pepperdine University and Santa Monica College. She has also taught at California Institute of the Arts and Occidental College. She is the co-artistic director of Chamber Music Palisades, now celebrating its 22nd season.
When she was only 18 years old, Zukovsky became the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s principal clarinetist. She went on to become the orchestra’s longest-serving female woodwind player and by the time she retired in December 2015, she had played under five of the orchestra’s major directors: Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, André Previn, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gustavo Dudamel.
“Michele Zukovsky is the standard for which I judge every other clarinetist,” said Mehta.
Since that time, Zukovsky has invested her energy in teaching both privately and at institutions, namely Azusa Pacific University, Citrus College and the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, all the while maintaining a busy schedule with guest master classes.
As a vocal coach, collaborative pianist and period keyboardist, Pierre Long-Tao Tang completed a doctoral degree in collaborative piano.
Tang oversees the instrumental ensemble program, directs the orchestra and wind ensemble, and serves as the conductor for the annual musical theater and opera productions at Pepperdine University.
Recently, Tang joined the roster of staff pianists at UCLA.
Tang’s performances as keyboardist have included St. Michael’s Church in Vienna, Alice Tully Hall of Lincoln Center in New York, Chicago Symphony Center and the Krannert Center in Illinois.
The Restoration Concerts Committee, a committee of the nonprofit The Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, has a goal to bring world-class music at an affordable price to concertgoers in South Pasadena and surrounding communities. As the name suggests, net proceeds from the concerts provide for restorations, enhancements and other benefits to the South Pasadena Library and Community Room.
