The Richmond Folk Festival returns September 27-29, celebrating its 20th anniversary!
Over the past twenty years, the Richmond Folk Festival has become one of Virginia’s largest and most cherished events. It draws fans to Downtown Richmond’s riverfront each year to celebrate the roots, richness, and variety of American culture through music, dance, traditional crafts, storytelling, and food. Over the past two decades, the event’s success has transformed the riverfront’s popularity and growth.
The Richmond Folk Festival, a free event that welcomes 200,000 people over a three-day weekend, is a testament to the power of diversity and inclusivity. With six stages and over 30 performing groups from around the nation and worldwide, the festival is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and traditions. This year, in honor of the festival’s 20th anniversary, we are bringing back several favorites from past years.
Not only is the Richmond Folk Festival taking place earlier than usual this fall to avoid falling on Yom Kippur, but there are also changes to the festival site. Due to exciting developments underway, two of the six stages will be in new locations. The updated festival site map will be available on our website soon and in the pocket guides distributed at the festival.
“The festival site on Downtown’s riverfront is an ever-changing one, as we see its growth and progress lead to a number of modifications,” said Stephen Lecky, director of events at Venture Richmond. “You’ll still find all your favorite things to see and do, but this year, you may need to look at the festival map to chart your course. We’ll provide you with everything you need to find what you’re looking for!”
The Richmond Folk Festival is presented by Venture Richmond Events in partnership with the National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA), Virginia Humanities, Center for Cultural Vibrancy, Children’s Museum and the City of Richmond.
