Snake Alley Art Fair calling for artists | The Hawk Eye – Burlington, Iowa

The 57th annual Snake Alley Art Fair is coming up June 16, and Art Center of Burlington is calling for vendors.

Artists are invited to apply for a chance to show their work at the festival — a summer event staple that will be open to shoppers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Father’s Day event on Heritage Hill will have artists selling original, hand-crafted wares; food vendors and live music, along with art-making activities for children.

As in past years, the artists won’t have to worry about setting up on unbelievably crooked Snake Alley.

Rather, they will set up on level streets such as North Street, Court Street and High Street, in the Heritage Hill Historic District.

Shoppers will find paintings, drawings, woodwork, metalwork, jewelry, sculptures, pottery, photography and more.

Organizers have simplified this year’s categories.

The categories are: 2D; 3D Functional; 3D Non-Functional; Painting, and Jewelry. Each will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards.

Artists may apply in more than one category, but must use a separate application for each medium.

Art Center officials in the past have noted that more than 6,000 people usually attend the art fair, which tends to get about 75 artist applications.

Participating artists receive free pastries and coffee the morning of the art fair, and through the day get ice cold water and booth sitters so they can break for lunch.

A pre-party the night before includes music, free pizza and a cash bar.

Application fee is $20, and the application deadline is March 15.

Artists will be notified by March 22 if they have been accepted. Booth fees are due by April 12.

All artwork must be original work of the individual displaying it. Items from kits, copies of other paintings, ceramics made from commercial molds and commercially fabricated jewelry are not eligible.

The fair is organized by Art Center of Burlington, a local non-profit organization with a mission to use the power of art to awaken the creative nature that is in every person, to connect us socially and to contribute to the vibrancy of Burlington.

Details and applications are available at artcenterofburlington.com. Food and beverage vendors are welcome to also apply on the website.

Emerging artists with little to no exhibition experience can pay a $15 fee to set up and sell original artwork on Snake Alley itself during the art fair.

They will need to fill out a different form than the regular application.

For more information, call the Center at (319) 754-8069.
