Somerville Artists Put Their Work On Display In Citywide Yart Sale

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Somerville Arts Council turned the city’s streets into an outdoor art gallery Saturday.

More than 60 artists living in Somerville signed up for the council’s citywide Yart Sale, a yard sale that replaces clocks, chairs, pots, and pans with any kind of art you can imagine.

“Biker vegetables,” said Ryan, holding up a black and white illustration of beefed up veggies she bought from an artist in Union Square. “Yeah, they just look cool and it’s a cucumber and a carrot smoking a cigarette, I don’t know.”

Kat bought an owl pendant necklace. She told WBZ NewsRadio while it is fun to get out and see the art, the connections you make with your neighbors are just as important.

“Yeah, it was just really fun seeing people out in the community and talking to so many people you wouldn’t otherwise,” Kat said.

This was the fourth year running for the Yart Sale, but the first year for artist Abby.

“I do different, colorful, character-based artwork,” Abby said. “I have fun, silly characters or food with faces and things like that, and I like to put it on all sorts of little products for people.”

Abby enjoyed showing off her illustrations to passersby, even with Saturday’s warm weather.

“I think it’s quite hot today, so maybe not as busy as some years, but there’s a decent amount of traffic and people who come are really friendly,” Abby said.
