Spotify has been publishing some more country-specific figures from its ‘Loud & Clear’ payouts data. This time it’s South Africa in the spotlight.
The company says that local artists generated nearly 400m ZAR of payouts – $21m at current exchange rates – from its service in 2024. That’s more than double the total they generated in 2022 according to Spotify.
It also said that the number of South African artists generating more than 100k ZAR ($5.3k) and more than 500k ZAR ($26.3k) has doubled since 2022.
Globally, South African music is being streamed for more than 600k hours a day on Spotify, fuelling 104% ‘export growth’ over the last three years.
Meanwhile, local consumption – South Africans listening to South African music on Spotify – has spiked by 281% in the last three years, including 96% year-on-year growth in 2024.
The release of the figures follows similar country-focused announcements by Spotify of its payouts for Nigeria and India.
