Roots/Raices showcases the work of 3 Latino artists working in different mediums. From Miguel Aragon’s pursuit to freeze a specific moment and passing of time with his prints to Julio Gonzalez’s Head masks exploring the observations of the world and Rosalia Torres-Weiner’s art activism paintings.

Each of these artists creates and presents a dialogue of their past, present, and future through the lens of history and culture.

Alison Brown On Stage at the Davis Theatre: Friday, Aug. 23, 7:30 p.m. Join us at the Davis Theatre for Alison Brown. One of the most multifaceted minds in roots music, Alison Brown is a Grammy-winning musician, Grammy-nominated producer, former investment banker (with an AB from Harvard and an MBA from UCLA), and co-founder of The Compass Records Group, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023. Although Brown began her musical career as a teenager in the Southern California bluegrass scene, she has built a reputation as one of today’s most forward thinking and innovative banjo players. She is known for taking the instrument far beyond its Appalachian roots by blending bluegrass and jazz influences into a sonic tapestry. Young Creatives Fall Art Class: Drawing and Painting 101: The class begins Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 4:30-6 p.m. This six-week course focuses on an introduction to painting and drawing techniques. Students will gain an understanding of and practice the principles and elements of design such as line, shape, value, and color theory through artworks of famous historical and contemporary artists. Working closely with local artists in a traditional studio environment, students will be guided in a fun and interesting way to develop their artistic voice to create one-of-a-kind art pieces that reflect their style. By the end of the class, students will be able to talk about their art and their classmates. No experience is required. All materials included. CAG CLASS: Landscapes in Wool with Lynn Cavanaugh – Saturday, Sept. 14, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Have you seen needle felting and wondered how they created such gorgeous, textured designs in wool? It involves a special felting needle being used to stab and agitate wool fibers so they join and bond together. The great thing about the process is that it is relaxing, creative and just plain fun. As you work your scene begins to develop into an enchanting design. The process is not difficult to learn and you have four choices in designs. The kit includes all the materials and tools necessary to complete your chosen design. The instructor will assist you through each step of the process offering individual help as needed. When you register, let Lynn know which of the designs you picked. She will prepare a kit just for you. Be sure to bring something for lunch during class. 2024 N.C. Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony: Thursday, Oct. 17, 6-10 p.m. The N.C. Music Hall of Fame announces six new inductees in its 2024 class. Join the celebration at the annual induction ceremony this fall. The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame will pay homage to six North Carolinians with their induction into its Hall of Fame. Those selected have left an indelible mark on the world of music. A ceremony to honor the inductees (presented by Visit Mooresville) will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17. The event will not only commemorate the great musical artists to be inducted but will also celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the Hall of Fame organization. CAG FREE DEMO: Fine Art Demonstration with Walter Stanford — Sunday, Oct. 13, 2-4 p.m. You are invited to join us for a demonstration/talk by Walter Stanford, fine artist, designer and illustrator. Stanford is a 1986 graduate of East Carolina University, where he earned a BFA from the School of Art with a major in illustration and a minor in printmaking. Over the course of his career, he has worked as a national freelance illustrator, advertising art director and screen print artist. He now brings all these experiences together to create dramatic wildlife portraits. He brings the subject in close where the viewer can get a sense of the animal’s personality. As Stanford states, “I want to bring that animal into a person’s home!” Walter’s studio is in the ClearWater Arts Center and Studios in Concord, and his works are represented by the Art Cellar Gallery in Banner Elk. New CAG Class: Create a Sleeping Kitty Needle Felted Fiber Painting with Irene Heckel-Volpe: Saturday, Oct. 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn to use needle felting wool fiber to “paint” a picture. We will be starting with a pre-felt base (sheet of partially felted wool) that has a transfer of the simple photo of a peaceful sleeping cat. Then, using our fibers and needles we will recreate our picture in fiber (and of course use our creative license!). We will be learning to blend fibers to get our results. Charlotte is Creative: The Pearl Art Call: The Pearl: Charlotte’s Innovation District, working through Charlotte Is Creative, has issued an open call for submissions to local and regional visual artists interested in being considered to create one of three original works of art designed for installation in The Assembly, part of The Pearl Research Building 1, currently under construction in Charlotte’s historic Brooklyn Community. The development team behind The Pearl has an exciting history of engaging local artists to create new work to display in their facilities. They are a careful and considerate partner seeking to create work that both enhances the places they build, but also that illuminates the larger culture and community in which their new facilities reside. The project must advance the overall vision of the Pearl; reflect with the evolving science, technology, innovation and education activities occurring in the area; and honor the broader Charlotte and Brooklyn communities, particularly its history and the traditions of the people who live there and who formerly lived in the area of the development. The project should have a memorable, iconic presence, as a feature element that can be identifiable as a symbol and a marker of The Pearl. It should provide a contrast with the surrounding architecture, in regard to its form, material and/or color.
