MUSKEGON, MI – A new exhibition featuring 16 contemporary Detroit artists whose work highlights the vibrancy and strength of the local art community will soon be in in Muskegon.
he world-famous Detroit art scene comes to West Michigan in an exhibition featuring 16 contemporary Detroit artists whose work highlights the strength and vibrancy of the Detroit art community.
“Visions: 16 Detroit Artists” will be featured at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W. Webster Ave., from Jan. 18 through April 28, according to a museum news release. The museum is promoting the event as the “world-famous Detroit art scene” coming to West Michigan.
Officials say guests can expect everything from jazz-inspired collages and large-scale portraits to photography and photorealism.
Hubert Massey, an award-winning Detroit artist and muralist, curated the exhibition. He is best known for his public murals found throughout Michigan. In West Michigan, Massey’s work is on the face of the VanDyk Mortgage Convention Center in downtown Muskegon.
Some may recognize Massey’s creations, especially in Detroit. Many of his murals are still on display in the city in Mexicantown, Greektown, Cobo Hall, and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
The works of art reveal the unique and diverse stories from within the art communities of Detroit, according to a news release.
An opening reception for “Visions: 16 Detroit Artists” will be held at the museum on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.
There will be a 6 p.m. artists panel featuring Massey as well artists Shirlee Woodson-Reid, Sydney James, Carole Morisseau, Richard Lewis and Peter Bernail. Some other Detroit artists participating in the new exhibition include:

The museum will host a presentation by Judy Hayner on public art in Muskegon at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22.
