Today, few people are familiar with the name and work of Berthe Morisot, one of the founding members of the artists collective known as the Impressionists. Yet Morisot not only exhibited in more Impressionist shows than such famous friends as Monet, Renoir, and Degas, but was lauded by many critics in her time as the most talented in the group and even considered the movement’s leader. What distinguished Morisot’s production from that of her predominantly male cohort was her radical handling of paint that blurs the line between description and abstraction, fixed and fluid, finished and unfinished. Dr. Nicole Myers is Chief Curatorial and Research Officer and the Barbara Thomas Lemmon Senior Curator at the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA). A specialist of French painting, she has published and lectured on wide-ranging topics from Realism to Symbolism, Poussin to Van Gogh. Myers joined the DMA in 2016 and leads the Museum’s Curatorial, Conservation, and Library and Archives departments. She also oversees the European art collection, which spans painting and sculpture from classical antiquity through mid-20th-century Modernism. At the DMA, Myers has curated/co-curated numerous exhibitions, most recently the critically acclaimed Van Gogh and the Olives Groves, co-organized with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (2021-2022). Before joining the curatorial team at the DMA, Myers served as the Associate Curator of European Painting and Sculpture at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, from 2011 to 2016. Myers completed her M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University with a dissertation on Gustave Courbet’s Realist nudes, and her B.A. in Art History & Archaeology and French at Washington University in St. Louis, where she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
