Carlow Nationalist — Sight and sound meet dance for special concert in Visual

By Suzanne Pender

OVER the past few months, 21 local artists from three artistic disciplines – visual, musical and dance – have been working together in groups of three to deliver seven original artistic works, comprising a visual art piece, an accompanying music composition and an interpretive dance.

The artists collaborated closely, sharing ideas, inspirations, stories and experiences to ensure that the three components fit together, complement one another and deliver a visual, aural and kinaesthetic experience for the audience.

The project, entitled Symmetry of Sound, will culminate in a live showcase in the Visual, Carlow on Thursday 9 November.

The visual artists’ works will be unveiled and projected onto the digital screen. Each artist will then talk about their work, inspiration, medium used and the creative and collaborative processes. The accompanying musician will then take to the stage and perform the original music composition, while a dancer will interpret both the art piece and musical accompaniment, bringing the visual art piece to life.

“Nothing like it has ever been done before and it will be such an incredible vehicle to highlight and promote the unbelievable creative talents of our local artists across many complementary disciplines,” said Justin Kelly from the creators of this project, the artistic community forum/group The Backline.

“We would like to thank Carlow County Council, arts officer Sinead Dowling, Creative Ireland, Carlow County Development Partnership, SICAP and cllrs Andrea Dalton, Adrienne Wallace, Fergal Browne, Tom O’Neill and Fintan Phelan for supporting this wonderful, creative and unifying project.

“And for sharing our vision in highlighting our incredible local creative talents, the power that art in all its forms possesses to change lives and the important role collaborative artistic projects such as this one play in promoting positive mental health,” added Justin.

Tickets for Symmetry of Sound – €12, including booking fee – are available from Visual.
