Loss to legacy: SA visual artist Lebohang Kganye turns sorrow into triumph with Deutsche Börse win

It is a story many families can identify with – the consequences of disruption of family life, forced migration and the erasure of identities and names in colonial and apartheid South Africa.

In the quest to investigate the origins of her family name, Lebohang Kganye skilfully blended photographs and words to create a masterpiece photo essay, which earned her the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation prize.

On Thursday, the 34-year-old Johannesburg-based visual artist was awarded the £30 000 prize for her exhibition Haufi nyana? I’ve come to take you home at a ceremony at The Photographers’ Gallery in London.
