Western Sydney University is proud to bring together a new exhibition celebrating artists and alumnae connected to western Sydney through, work, study, family or home, in a new exhibition titled, Women (seen).

A Western Sydney Creative initiative, the exhibition aims to celebrate women artists by recognising their contribution to western Sydney cultural diversity, and address gender inequality within the community.

Drawing from the University’s own Art Collection or loaned works from the artists or their estates. Women (seen) speaks of identity, community, and belonging. It honours what once was, and what is now.

Western Sydney is home to Australia’s most culturally diverse communities. With 10 per cent of the nation’s population calling it home, it provides fertile ground for creativity, authentic storytelling, experimentation and expression.

Over the years, Western Sydney University has played a critical role in the advancement of visual arts literacy and training in the region, with 15 of the exhibiting artists in Women (seen) having graduated from the University, across visual arts, electronic arts, visual communications, and education.

It is this legacy that is reflected in the exhibition and resonates widely throughout the art sector today with an impressive list of student and staff alumnae working as professional artists, lecturers, and curators.

Exhibiting artists at Women (seen) include:

  • Anastasia Zaravinos aka Adonis

The exhibition was developed by a curatorium of artists, authors and curators including, Dr Christine Dean, Hannah Donnelly, Julie Ewington, Shivanjani Lal and Margaret Hancock from Western Sydney Creative.

In 2019, Western Sydney University released its decadal arts and cultural strategy, Western Sydney Creative. Western Sydney Creative underpins the University’s long-term commitment to the arts and cultural sector, including championing, celebrating and investing in the region’s artistic and cultural landscapes.

Over the course of the exhibition Western Sydney Creative, will be holding a series of public programs, including a Women in the Arts Leadership forum, in conjunction with Penrith Preforming and Visual Arts, on Tuesday, 5 March 2024.

Women (seen) will formally open on Tuesday, 28 November 2023, with an afternoon of networking with collaborative artists, programme partners, and local arts organisations.  Please register your attendance via the Humantix website(opens in a new window).
