A Wicklow artist is taking part in the prestigious Connecting Artists 2024 programme, which is an initiative that aims to empower visual artists with intellectual disabilities.

Joe Hallam, a talented 23-year-old artist from Enniskerry, will showcase his artwork on a national level and is one of 10 artists selected from across Ireland to participate in this 10-week online programme, which culminates in an exhibition hosted by Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in Dublin. The exhibition will be held from Wednesday July 3 to Sunday July 7.

The Connecting Artists programme, designed by Miriam Spollen, founder of Connections Arts Centre, aims to empower visual artists with intellectual disabilities by providing a platform for them to develop their creative practice and gain professional recognition.

Joe has been doing art since he was 15, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings of his home in Enniskerry. He enjoys taking his sketchbook outdoors to draft ideas, with a particular fondness for drawing tree barks, landscapes, and flowers. Joe prefers using acrylics to create an impactful, abstract style that brings his art to life. His dedication to his craft sees him drawing nearly every day, driven by a dream to work for himself as a professional artist.

Reflecting on his upcoming participation, Joe said: “I am very excited and grateful to be part of the Connecting Artists Programme. It’s an amazing opportunity to expand my work as an artist and exhibit for the first time. The journey so far has been incredible.”

Miriam highlighted the ongoing success and impact of the programme and thanked the public for their continued support.

“As we enter the third year of the Connecting Artists programme, the dedication of our 10 wonderful mentors and the collaboration with the RCSI Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Unit remain crucial. We are thrilled to see the 2024 participants’ fantastic artwork exhibited at a national level. The consistent support from the public, both business and community, has been incredible and continues to inspire us.”

The Connecting Artists 2024 exhibition will be officially opened by RTÉ presenter and broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan. It will feature diverse and exceptional artwork from the participating artists, offering a unique opportunity for the public to appreciate and support their talents and providing attendees the chance to meet the artists and purchase original artwork and cards.
