Two new multi-million euro radiotherapy machines are being installed at UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford.
UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford City has announced an investment of €7.8 million in cancer treatment with the installation of two state-of-the-art radiotherapy machines.
In a statement to the Waterford News & Star, a spokesperson for the hospital said the investment marks “a significant stride in enhancing cancer care in the South East region”.
“The two linear accelerators underscore UPMC’s commitment to providing advanced, accessible oncology services to the local community,” said the spokesperson in the statement.
“The new equipment not only represents an upgrade to the radiotherapy department, but also a crucial step in ensuring that oncology patients receive the highest quality care close to home,” he said.
The UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre, located at the Waterford hospital, serves as a hub for comprehensive cancer care and houses multidisciplinary teams that collaborate to provide a wide range of services, including medical oncology, radiation therapy, and supportive care.
Mary Hickey, Director of Oncology Services at UPMC, expressed her enthusiasm about the new equipment, and said: “The installation of these state-of-the-art linear accelerators is a game-changer for oncology patients in the region. The new machines will be equipped with the latest technological advancements, allowing for precise and personalised radiation therapy treatment plans. These advancements translate into shorter treatment times, reduced side effects, and improved outcomes for oncology patients.”
