News: The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation and Denver Arts & Venues have announced that applications are now being accepted for the first Social Impact Artist Award, an initiative that offers a significant reward to Denver-based artists or art collectives.

Each of three Denver-based artists or art collectives will be awarded $50,000 in recognition and support of outstanding artistic contributions that champion positive impact and social justice. The award includes $35,000 in cash and $15,000 for creation of a socially engaged project.

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Aug. 23. Forms can be found by visiting bonfils-stantonfoundation.org or artsandvenuesdenver.com

In announcing the award, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston noted that “Denver has a proud legacy of artists whose work is guided by the issues, hopes and dreams of community. Now more than ever cities need artists who can imagine new possibilities that reshape and better our country.”

Gary Steuer, president and chief executive officer of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, pointed out that “For over a decade now, we’ve made a strategic decision to direct our funding toward the arts. Art has the power to transform every aspect of community life, from the economy down to the social fabric of neighborhoods. This new award is a testament to our commitment and the potential we see in our local artists.”

Tariana Navas-Nieves, the deputy director of Denver Arts & Venues, added: “Generations from now, when people look back at who and what has shaped Denver into a leading city, these expressions of art will be a part of that story.”

About the organizations: The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation strategically invests in imagination and innovation with the belief that extraordinary arts and leadership are key to building a vibrant Colorado. Since its founding, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation has distributed over $90 million in charitable contributions.
