Artists sought for new entryway to Cathedral Hill

A local nonprofit is calling on artists to create a piece of work to help beautify parts of Downtown Jacksonville.

The Cathedral District-Jax — a nonprofit that helps guide the revitalization of the historic Cathedral District — is encouraging artists to submit proposals for new entryway artwork that will be installed at two intersections in the area. The nonprofit said the artwork will be installed at the corners of Main and Church streets and Adams and Market streeets.

The Cathedral District is a 118-acre portion of Downtown Jacksonville. The area is bordered by Main Street to the west, Hogans Creek to the east, State Street to the north and Adams Street to the south.

The nonprofit said the entryway project is open to artists at least 18 years old who have been practicing art for at least three years. Artists would need to create and submit either four 3D gateway signs or two gateway arches for the project. The pieces of art will need to be sturdy and able to take the everyday wear and tear that happens in an urban outdoors area of Florida.

The deadline for proposals is 11:59 p.m. Aug. 1.

Cathedral District-Jax President Ginny Myrick said the project will help to create a sense of place for the historic neighborhood.

“We don’t have anything specific that we’re looking for. It’s going to be completely creative by the artists that submit,” Myrick said.

A small committee of art experts will review the submissions and announce a winner Aug 12.

The nonprofit said the project will have a $43,500 budget funded by local and regional community organizations including AARP, the Downtown Investment Authority, St. Johns Cathedral, Aging True and JEA.

Proposals can be submitted on the Cathedral District’s website.

Once a winner is selected, the artworks are expected to be installed by early December.
