Chappell Roan wrangles together campy glitz and the glam of manic dance-pop to create anthems of queer euphoria. This year, she’s headed out on massive tour dates, including slots at Coachella 2024 and support on select dates for Olivia Rodrigo on her GUTS tour. If you’ve had even a minuscule taste of the meteoric energy she brings to her tracks, you’ll know that she’s someone who begs to be experienced live.
Hailing from Willard, MO, the journey that brought Kayleigh Rose Amstutz out west is a familiar one. After a childhood spent learning the piano and performing at events like a local Christmas Pageant, she spent her teenage years posting covers on YouTube, which earned the ears of record labels like Atlantic Records, who signed her before her move to Los Angeles in 2018.
Despite missing out on formative adolescent experiences like prom and graduation, she took a leap of faith. A perfect storm of setbacks — she was dropped by her label just before the pandemic and experienced the dissolution of a four-year relationship — forced her momentarily back to Missouri. But the disappointment and fear of failing weren’t enough to douse her spirit, and in 2022, she made a return to the West Coast.
Just before being cut loose from Atlantic, Chappell Roan had teamed up with Rodrigo’s producer Daniel Nigro for “Pink Pony Club,” a song inspired by a visit to the West Hollywood gay bar The Abbey. Upon her return, she reunited with him to create the shimmering anthem “Naked in Manhattan” and “Femininomenon” — a bop that fuses rousing balladry with earworm hooks.
Now signed with Island Records, she released her sprawling debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, just last year. Its 14 tracks are a rapt chronicle of the feverish highs and lows she’s arduously traveled to get where she is today. Exhilarating and breathless, Chappell Road offers a prismatic vision of queer love, gushing with steamy sensuality (“Guilty Pleasure”), flirtatious exuberance (“Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl”), and a hypnotic bite (“My Kink Is Karma”) all of it painted in a vibrant synth-pop.
