City of Santa Maria hosts free workshops to empower local artists | Lifestyles

This weekend marks the start of a series of free workshops organized by the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture, aimed at empowering local artists to better monetize their artistic endeavors.

These workshops are part of the Recreation and Parks Art Master Plan, focused on the developing an educational program to increase capacity for local artists. Led by local artist Adrienne de Guevara, the sessions are designed to equip artists with essential skills to enhance their artistic careers.

“The City of Santa Maria is committed to supporting our local arts community and providing opportunities for growth,” said Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Services Manager. “These workshops are a significant step toward fulfilling the goals of our Art Master Plan and fostering a vibrant artistic environment in Santa Maria.”

The first workshop entitled “Artistic Career Planning and Time Management” will be held this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. At this weekend’s workshop, artists will learn practical tools to develop their career aspirations and manage their time effectively to achieve their goals.

At the same time next Sunday, Sept. 1, the “Portfolio Kit and Promotions” workshop will share insights with participants on how to refine their artist statements, format work samples, and craft compelling messages to promote their work.

The series ends on Sunday, Sept. 8 with a workshop covering the fundamentals of grant writing, including structuring narratives and understanding fiscal sponsorships to secure funding for artistic projects.

The workshops, titled “Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists,” are free to attend, but registration is required to ensure sufficient materials are available for all participants.

Each session will be held at the Elwin E. Mussell Senior Center, located at 510 East Park Avenue.
