MONSON — Portraiture artist, painter, and entrepreneur Lydia Rose Spencer will be featured on Friday, Feb 2 from 4-6 p.m. at the Monson Gallery Store for its Meet the Artist, First Friday’s event. She will be doing a demo of her Nature Goddess skincare products as well as having her work on display. We will also be having food from the Monson General Store as well as offering a wine tasting from J Lohr vineyards.

Additionally, Spencer is part of the new Monson Arts Gallery display opening up the same night. Entitled “Defiant”, Spencer and painter Suzzanah Sinclair’s work will be up at the Monson Arts Gallery until April 21. The Monson Arts Gallery is right next door to the Monson Gallery Store sharing the same building.

Spencer grew up on a horse farm in Piscataquis County. She studied fine art at the University of Maine and the New Hampshire Institute of Art. Early in her painting career Spencer realized she had a skill for portraiture and capturing something more than just a likeness. She focused her studies on oil painting techniques and the many approaches to portraiture. She feels a deep connection to the female identity and the many roles that women play in society. She is drawn to capturing complex and often difficult subjects and emotions in simple and powerful compositions.

Spencer has been honored with painting official retirement portraits for two Maine Justices. Her work is represented by 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago. Two of her paintings were recently included in the Lunar Codex, which is a collection of contemporary working artists that will be archived on the moon in 2024.

Spencer lives and works in Dover-Foxcroft.
