NKollectiv embraces spring with group exhibition, new member artist

NKollectiv at 960 Santa Fe Drive presents “ReAwakening,” a group exhibition to mark the start of spring. The show features the gallery’s current mix of local artists and will be introducing a new member to the group, painter Elissa Quist. Guest printmakers Zelga Miller and Timothea Biermann are participating in conjunction with the larger Month of Printmaking celebration. The public is invited to view the show through April 15 during regular business hours Wednesdays through Sundays, and during these special events:

  • First Friday Art Walk: April 5, through 9 p.m.
  • Sundays on Santa Fe Art Walk: Sunday, March 31, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Encaustic Monotypes Demo: Saturday, March 30, noon to 4 p.m. (drop-in); featuring Kelly Austin-Rolo and Michele Messengerat the new Prism Arts Workshop at Prism Workspaces, 999 Vallejo St. Free to attend.
  • Artist Talk and Screenprinting Demo: Saturday, April 6, 2 p.m. at NKollectiv. With Timothea Biermann. Free to attend.

New member artist Quist is an abstract painter based in Denver who specializes in oil paint and cold wax. A graduate of Art Center College of Design in California, Quist’s education spans a distinct combination of both classical and conceptual art. Her practice revolves around the nuanced interplay of ‘being’ and the external forces that shape our state of mind. Drawing from diverse influences, Quist navigates the psychological effects of color, incorporating both historical and contemporary, natural and manufactured subject matter to deepen the viewer’s connection to her work.

Guest artist Biermann is a prolific silkscreen printmaker, large-scale abstract painter, teaching artist and co-founder of the Chameleon Art Collective. In addition to other art studies, she graduated with honors with a bachelor of fine arts in ceramics from Maine College of Art and earned a master of arts in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. An educator for 25 years, Biermann currently teaches painting and drawing at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver.

Guest artist Miller uses a range of media, moving between printmaking, drawing and painting, in pursuit of a balance between a sense of stillness and dynamic fluidity. Her work speaks of layers — of peeling back the veneer of the everyday to uncover a sense of disquiet in an otherwise serene scene. Her practice looks beyond the physical elegance of the line and more intensively toward the emotional vulnerability of the figure.
