The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies honored the winners of the esteemed International Architecture Awards 2023 in a ceremony next to the Acropolis

Athens, Greece

Now in its 18th year, the International Architecture Awards®, the first and oldest global tributes of their kind, recognize the world’s best new buildings and urban planning projects and landscape architecture for 2023 that provide contemporary insight into their country’s architecture, design, culture, and social trends.

“These are examples of forward thinking and ingenuity that raise the bar for us all”

The annual program first launched in 2005 celebrates the best contemporary architecture and highlights the many ways buildings and spaces can improve the lives of people who work, live, and recreate worldwide, no matter the form, size, or budget of each project.

“This year’s awards,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum president and CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum, “feature a range of generous buildings that enrich their local communities, creating opportunities for people to connect.”

“These awards continue to evolve to encourage best practice in sustainable development. Most of the projects have been ‘in use’ for at least one year and have submitted data demonstrating their environmental performance.”

“At this time, when building collaboratively and working towards a sustainable future are paramount, the 2023 Award winners offer a rich source of inspiration. Each project looks, in its own way, to address both its client brief and the wider role architecture can play in serving society.”

“Among the winners are a number of projects that offer a model for an architecture that is more widely responsible.”

“These selected buildings and urban planning projects intelligently illustrate the potential of well-designed spaces to bring people together and, ultimately, Good Designs’ power to change our world for the better.”

“The awards are also a marker of progressive excellence in sustainable design, very much aligned with the world’s wider commitment to a low carbon future.”
This year, from a shortlist of over 500 pre-selected submissions, the 150 plus award-winning buildings and urban planning projects are spread across 48 countries—from Ethiopia to Tokyo, from New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In addition to the 150 plus awarded projects another 60 honorable mentions were also cited.
