Astoria Visual Arts to host conversation with Shoalwater Bay artists | Arts

ASTORIA — A panel of Shoalwater Bay artists will hold a 1 p.m. Saturday discussion at Astoria Visual Arts.

This event is part of the gallery’s ongoing exhibit, “Portrait of Eugene Landry — an Artist, a Time and a Tribe,” which brings together the artwork of Landry (1937-1988) with contemporary woodwork, photography, painting, beadwork and film by tribal artists.

Those artists include carver Earl Davis, who has served as Shoalwater Bay Tribe’s culture director and his son, photographer Dakota Davis.

Also exhibiting are Sophia Anderson, who paints portraits of her ancestors on reclaimed wood from homes that have washed into the sea; Madison, who works with diverse mediums such as makeup, ink on paper, digital art, beadwork and sewing; and Erik Sanchez, who has made a 9-minute documentary about Landry’s work and the Shoalwater Bay Reservation.
