The Sarasota Art Museum, of the Ringling College of Art and Design, stands as a beacon of contemporary art and culture in Sarasota, Florida. Contemporary/Traditional: Selections from the Basch Glass Collection

Now through February 11, 2024

Drawn from the Richard and Barbara Basch Collection, Contemporary/Traditional offers a glimpse into the world of international contemporary glass art. This exhibition showcases a stunning range of glasswork styles, from delicate figural sculptures to powerful abstract shapes.

Judy Pfaff: Picking up the Pieces

Now through March 24, 2024

Judy Pfaff, widely regarded as a pioneer of installation art, has created work that spans disciplines. Pfaff ingeniously transmutes and transforms materials, mixing objects and artistic mediums in striking, unexpected combinations. Picking up the Pieces is a site-responsive exhibition, made specifically for Sarasota Art Museum, and Pfaff’s largest work since 2017. In a massive assemblage of sculpture, found objects, painting, and architecture, Pfaff creates a poignant tribute to Florida’s environment and the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ian in September 2022.

Art Center Sarasota

Art Center Sarasota, situated just beyond Downtown Sarasota, proudly presents four meticulously curated galleries that celebrate the talents of local, regional, and international artists. Open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, this vibrant hub engages the community through captivating pop-up exhibitions and contemporary pieces crafted to captivate and provoke contemplation. Its expansive atrium gallery is a dedicated space that showcases the remarkable talents of Sarasota and its neighboring region’s artists through meticulously juried competitions. Every six weeks, new exhibitions grace the walls, offering fresh perspectives and inspiration. Moreover, Art Center Sarasota plays host to a diverse array of international and local teaching artists, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of Sarasota.

The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art

A visit to Sarasota’s art scene would be incomplete without mentioning The Ringling. Thanks to the philanthropic legacy of John Ringling, every Monday is an art lover’s dream, as visitors can explore The Ringling’s art museum, bayfront gardens, and the stunning Kotler-Coville glass art pavilion free of charge. This opportunity provides an accessible gateway to world-class art collections, picturesque gardens, and the chance to witness the beauty of glass artistry. It’s worth noting that while The Ringling mansion and circus museum are not included in the free admission, they are well worth a visit for those interested in history and the circus arts.

Sarasota Studio Artists Association

If you’re looking to experience the art scene from a different angle, the Sarasota Studio Artists Association is the perfect choice. On the second Saturday of most months, this eclectic group of over 70 artists opens their studios scattered throughout the region. With diverse collectives like the Creative Liberties Artist Studios & Gallery on Apricot Avenue, there’s a wide array of artistic styles and mediums to discover. Venice Art Center

Explore the heart of Historic Downtown Venice at the Venice Art Center, a vibrant hub showcasing 12 distinctive exhibits each year. Within its walls, discover the Pat Buster Gallery, unveiling monthly, avant-garde displays free for public enjoyment, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. The Altman-Vogt Gallery proudly hosts the finest local artists, presenting their diverse creations year-round. Delve into the Sales Gallery, housing a Gift Shop featuring over 100 skilled local artisans, showcasing an array of mixed media such as jewelry, ceramics, and paintings. Beyond its walls, satellite galleries at the Inn at the Beach and Venice Theatre extend the artistic experience. With a team of 55 talented instructors, the center offers 550 annual adult and children’s classes and workshops, fostering creative growth for all ages.
