Murshid Jahangir’s visual art exhibition ‘+ 20 Hz/freezing’

Murshed Jahangir’s exhibition + 20 Hz/freezing” organized by the Kalakendra Foundation will be inaugurated on Friday, December 1 at 6 pm at Kalakendra, Lalmatia.

Lala Rukh Selim, Professor of Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka and art writer Javed Jalil will attend the opening as guest.

The exhibition reflects the midst of a moment defined by a blend of past, present, and future within a singular ‘block’ of time, individuals simultaneously traverse multiple geopolitical spaces. The era embodies a personalized, dialogical logic of ‘information groundswell,’ where everyone acts as both creator and consumer. This cultural shift unfolds through forging new connections among scattered media contents, a reflection of all of these informs the exhibition titled ‘+ 20 Hz/freezing’.

Murshed Jahangir express art through juxtaposing diverse materials and playfully rearranging their established relationships, delves into the very essence of our existence. His art pieces speak of his contemplation on the chaos and choreography of elements within the realms of time, space, mind, matter manifesting in interpenetrative dialogues.

“As a visual artist, my creations serve as reflections of my profound interactions with the world around me. I make use of a diverse range of media—spanning from sculptures and installations to drawings, videos, sound, and digital elements. I prefer to lend a psychological, spiritual, and philosophical stance to the artistic tools of media and process. Each of my works embodies a microcosm of existence, drawing on the essence of human comprehension shaped by our daily encounters with societal norms. As part of my process, I playfully indulge in experimenting with all the elements at my disposal,” statement of artist Murshid.

He navigates his own ‘cognitive dissonance’ induced by enduring internal and interpersonal conflicts, societal incongruities, and global political theatrics by infusing a string of disconnected meanings into a slew of seemingly irrational yet critically provocative works. These works are more or less presented as unconventional intermedial and intertextual mind-matter experiments.

Life, is an excess within matter striving to transcend present forms, or in other words a potentiality inherent in matter, whether animate or inanimate—a pivotal premise underpinning the exhibition.

Murshed Jahangir’s drawings, three-dimensional objects, kinetic sculptures, installations and text seek to plumb the depths of experience. The intention is to suspend one’s calculative consciousness and enable an unfiltered freedom for experiences to resonate unimpeded.

Jahangir transgresses preordained socio-historical positions with sardonic humor. The resulting body of work bears traces of dismantled human anatomy, symbolizing a dethroning of ‘centrism.’ The ‘body’s’ gaps, fissures, and porosity serve as windows onto a world perpetually unraveling itself toward an indefinable change.
